TUSKALOOSA

Glad you could make it! Your very own tour guide of a city called "Tuskaloosa" in the early days. It has been called many things including the "Home of The Crimson Tide."

The history of Alabama is spoken in many stories. The aborigines found in the territory now embraced in Alabama were the Indians known to history as the Cherokees, Choctaws, Chikasaws, Muscogees, Snicktaw, Tensaws and the Yahoo. The first white people to enter Alabama were De Soto and his party of 1000 men in 1540. This is when De Soto met Chief Tuskaloosa in Maubila near Mobile.

The name Alabama is derived from the river of the same name, and is popularly supposed to mean "Here We Rest."

The name Tuscaloosa or Tuskaloosa gets its name from the Choctaw Indian named Chief "Tuskaloosa" (Tushka~lusa) meaning Black Warrior. Also the suzerain of many territories and of a numerous people. Chief Tuskaloosa was able to look out over a wide river cutting through his land and this we know today as The Black Warrior River.

Alabama was settled chiefly by immigrants from Georgia, the Carolina's, Virginia and Tennessee. Alabama's history, from her admission as a state to the breaking out of the Civil War, was one of almost unparalleled growth and prosperity. Alabama sent over 120,000 soldiers to the Civil War. Important battles were fought within her borders at Fort Morgan, Spanish Fort, Fort Blakely, Elyton, Selma, Tuscaloosa and Pleasanthill.

The close of the Civil War was followed by the turbulent era of Reconstruction. The people were poor, their homes destroyed, and the government of the state was in confusion.

Tuscaloosa was actually the capital of Alabama in 1826 to 1846. Montgomery now reigns as the capital of Alabama since 1846.
